A delightful, rustic tern, crafted in the Raku ceramic technique. Has a small hanging wire embedded to the rear, for hanging or perhaps 'flying' on your wall. In Finnish, this bird is known as Tiira, rather a pretty name - yes?

Minimalist in nature with a Scandinavian design that brings the outside inside. Suiting both modern and traditional design choices, this is a perfect gift for that bird and nature lover in your life!

Height about 3.5 inches (9 cm). Width about 5.5 inches (15 cm).

Each item has its own unique crackles, because it is raku fired.
Please allow for differences from the one pictured. That is the magic of raku!

I ship this item from Finland via Priority mail. However, Economy is also possible for this item. Please ask.

Please note a photo may display more than one of this item. It is simply for demonstration purposes only and to show a collection together. The price listed is for ONE item only. Raku is not food safe.

The product is made from clay and fired in a ceramic oven and then glazed with my “Koivu” glaze. I do the raku firing outside in the harsh elements of Lapland's nature. After quickly reaching a temperature of about 1000 degrees Celsius (1800 Fahrenheit) the product is then placed in a tin container filled with wood chips or pine twigs that catch on fire. The thermal shock causes cracklings that become black with the smoke. Finally it is dipped in cool water or snow as we have a lot of that on hand in Lapland! This sets the final design for the network of cracklings characteristic to raku, making each item a one of a kind piece.

The name of my collection is “Koivu” which means birch in Finnish. Birch trees are very important to Finns. Almost every family has their own "Home Birch" in the yard, which "protects" the family standing still while the wind blows and snowstorms rage. The leafy, fragrant boughs of the birch trees have many uses. In the summer they are displayed like flowers in a vase and larger branches are made into trellises for weddings and other celebrations like the Midsummer Solstice. Finns also use the aromatic young birch branches to gently whisk themselves with in the sauna, which has a relaxing effect on the muscles and an exfoliating effect on the skin.
