The extra-terrestrial in his (it's?) cockpit forms the lid to this fantastic, ufo shaped, raku-fired teapot. The alien has two red glass eyes and six blue speckled tentacles (hence the six drink holders in the cockpit!).

The teapot is glazed with a metallic and iridescent glaze that had a many-colored, oil-on-water effect. The handle is matte black and the inside of the teapot is a milky white glaze with a crackle pattern - traditional to raku firing. The glaze in the inside is food-safe and the teapot could be used for cold liquids but due to the raku-firing process the pot isn't sturdy enough to stand up to boiling water. Best as a decorative piece. Be sure to see our listing for two teacups to go with this teapot.

Each of our pieces is sealed with silicone grout sealer, which very effectively keeps the glazes from changing color over time.

In raku firing, pieces are removed from the kiln while still glowing-hot and placed into a reduction chamber (ours is a large metal garbage can filled with newspaper). The newspaper surrounding the pieces bursts into flame and is allowed to burn briefly, then smothered. The resulting reduction atmosphere changes the glazes, giving them metallic, iridescent or opalescent effects and, on some glazes, a fine crackle pattern. Glazes can vary wildly, even within the same firing and so the results are always exciting and no two pieces are exactly alike.
