I started making these sculptures several years ago, and I still love creating them. Each is made by throwing an enclosed form on the wheel for the body, sculpting the face and ears onto the body by hand, and finishing each one differently- anything from intricate carving, to simple glazing. The result is a piece of art that is truly one of a kind! And doesn’t shed.

I’m sure I have one for the cat lover in your life. Maybe that’s you!

This handsome specimen measures about 6.5 inches in diameter. I’ve affectionately referred to him as “Sumo cat” because there is something in his bearing and expression that reminds me of a Sumo wrestler- he seems to sit heavily. Most of his surface is raw, brown stoneware that I textured while it was still on the wheel by pressing outward and creating surface cracks (they don’t go all the way through). In addition, I added yellow grog to the clay that shows through when I use this technique. (Grog is a ceramic term for small pieces of fired clay that are added to the clay body when wet.) To finish it off, I poured a shiny yellow glaze over the top of his head, wiping some away on the surface so it shows off the texture. He is signed with my potter’s mark and dated on the bottom.

I hope you’ve enjoyed taking a look at him!
