This is a life size canvas over wire American Wigeon drake decoy. The American Wigeon, also known as the Bald Pate due to its white crown, is a fairly common duck in the United States. The drakes are easily identified in flight by their bright white shoulder patches, although they are often heard before being seen. They have a very distinctive whistling, loud, and far carrying call - WHO-HE-who - that they give frequently.

This style of decoy was commonly used on the eastern shore around the turn of the century. The body of the decoy is formed by pulling and tacking a canvas skin over a frame made of a wooden bottom board and backbone with wire “ribs” to give the body its shape. Once painted, the canvas shrinks and conforms even more to the frame making the decoy quite durable.

The Wigeon has a hand carved basswood head with taxidermy quality glass eyes and is hand painted using acrylic paints and sealed with acrylic sealer. This is an unkeeled decoy so it will sit well on a shelf or table.

All of my work is signed and numbered, and since I make them one at a time, they all have a slightly different pose or attitude. This particular bird also has my initials carved into the base near the front of the decoy.

Shipping within the US is included in the price of this decoy!

Wigeon measures: 16” long, 6” tall and 6.25” wide
