It is the winter solstice as I write this; let us turn our thoughts to flowers...

The Burgess Flower Book For Children is an amazing blend of horticulture and whimsy. Written for children to learn about and appreciate flowers, it's truly a delight, even today, for children and adults who adore the world of flowers. Here is his dedication at the start of the book: "To the awakening in children of love for our wild flowers and the desire to preserve them in their native habitats for the beauty and joy they give to the world this book is dedicated."

The book has 103 illustrations in color and black-and-white and 42 chapters of stories where our guide Peter Rabbit explores his way through the varieties of flowers. (This is where we enter the realm of fantasy, because the bunnies in my back yard tend to dine upon, rather than observe, my flowers.) I've included a photo of the first page of the table of contents so you can get an idea that this isn't a dry horticultural tome. There is, however, a wonderful appendix at the end with descriptions and definitions that would be useful to an experienced adult gardener.

There is no dust jacket for this hardcover book, but you can see the pastedown illustration is in lovely, unblemished condition. There is the slightest bit of bending at the corners, but virtually no shelfware or fading. Look at the design on the spine of the book! So pretty.

The interior is in tight, seemingly unread condition. There is a bit of age-related tanning, but it is uniform and minimal. I don't know how an 86-year-old book could be in much better condition. And it is a big book; 350 pages long.

This book is highly collectible and is, in fact, being reprinted because it is so wonderful. This is the original book in near-fine condition, and it is something that a child or a grown-up could fall in love with.

What a find for a gardener who dreams of spring on dark winter nights.
