Cloisonné is one type of enameling, the process of fusing glass to metal. The cloisonné technique utilizes fine wires bent into the outline of a design to create compartments which are called cloisons in French. These compartments are then filled with thin layers of finely ground vitreous glass which has been rinsed many times in distilled water and wet packed onto a metal base with a small brush. I fire each layer in a 1500 degree kiln, and each piece has up to 30 layers. I use Japanese and French enamels which are prized for their intense color and clarity, and either fine silver or 24 kt gold wire to “draw” my designs. It is a time consuming and exacting process, which may take several days from design to completion. Every piece is one of a kind and completely handmade, a sparkling sentiment captured in materials that will not fade or decay with time. Photography is unable to truly capture the brilliance of these beautiful pieces of art jewelry created for you, by me, with love.

The Inspiration: As with most of the faces I do, this one was free-handed with no initial design. I wanted her to look a little eccentric, thus the bright green eye shadow and ruby lips. She's wrapped up tight against the cold but she's colorful, frazzled, and her own source of sunshine.
