1930s Pinocchio, Vintage Children's Book

This richly illustrated vintage book from the 1930s is the classic by Carlo Collodi, Pinocchio: The Adventures of a Puppet, published by A.L. Burt Co and translated by M.A. Murray. The book has no copyright date, but an inscription on the inside back cover indicates it was a Christmas gift in 1935.

The book has a green cloth cover with dark green embossed lettering. There's a four-color frontispiece signed by Charles Folkard, and black and white drawings on almost every spread, including many full-page illustrations, also by Folkard. The illustrations are charming, but in some cases slightly disturbing (there's a lot more thrilling adventures in the original story than in the Disneyfied version). The end papers are what looks like block prints of animals, printed in green.

The book is in good condition. The pages are yellowed; a few have darker stains. There is one small tear on the title page but none others that I could find. The cover is faded, especially on the spine, and has wear around the edges and the mark of a glass on the front. The binding is tight.

Size: 8 1\/2 x 5 1\/2 inches (21.5 x 14 cm), 258 pp.
