This is a gorgeous pickle castor with a bulbous cranberry inverted thumbprint insert. The frame was made by the Wilcox Silver Plate Co. in Meridian Conn. The frame is in good condition for its age. It has a brass vine twirled around the floral silverplate handle. The frame is sturdy and has a nice floral and vine relief around the base. It has not been polished, and may brighten up with a gentle polish. The bottom is marked Quadruple Plate, Wilcox Silver Plate Co., Meridian, Conn. Its form # is 6514. The cranberry jar is in good condition, with one chip as shown in the photo, plus 2 flea bites. All flaws are hidden when the lid is in place.

The cranberry glass insert was likely made by Northwood. Measuring just the glass jar, it's just over 4 inches tall. At the rim, it's 2-1/4 inches wide, and the bulbous part toward the bottom is over 3-1/2 inches wide.

Pickle Castors (or Casters) were fancy silver plate and glass serving pieces used on the dinner tables of upper and upper-middle class Victorians. Most were made between 1860 and 1910 with the majority produced in the 1880's. Pickle castors are highly sought after.

Normally I would list a castor of this design and fabulous color for about $850+; however this castor has tarnishing and chips as noted, and no tongs, so it has been priced accordingly. As you can see in the photos, it displays very nicely and has wonderful charm and elegance. The color is a true Victorian cranberry color.
