FAQ - Some questions we have received from collectors.

1. What exactly is a limited edition?
An edition that is limited to a declared number. Once that number is reached, no more will be made.

2. What creates the finish on the buckles?
The buckles are hand patinated and then buffed (polished), leaving the patina in the undercuts. This increases the three-dimensionality and produces a durable finish. Over time brass will oxidize. The finish can be allowed to darken or can be kept bright. Care instructions are included with the buckle.

Carl Tasha, who passed away a few years ago, lived most of his life in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the tip of Cape Cod. He is most widely known for his sculpture, jewelry and buckles.

The distinctive style of his work is due in part to the specific metalsmithing techniques he used and developed: melting bronze rods with a hand-held torch, guiding the flowing metal with the melting rod, forging the work (bending and hammering) as the metal cooled, and sometimes fusing separate elements together to form one piece.

The smooth, almost mirror-like, surfaces were produced during the forging process by hammering the metal as it cooled. (Also note how this design is enhanced by the patina in the undercuts, which increases its three-dimensionality.)

The limited editions of his designs have all been produced over the years by Carl Tasha Designs in Limited Editions, the studio founded by Carl and Nancy Gribbin in the early 1970’s to make castings of his work. My sister met Carl and Nancy in those early years, and it is through her that I have been able to arrange to offer buckles from the editions that are still open and being produced by the studio. Just as in prior years, each piece is made under the careful eye and hand of Nancy Gribbin.
