My winning entry to Beadwork Magazine's competition - "The Beaded Book" from 2009, which traveled to two Beadfest Shows & is now back home, "Visions of Gandalf the Grey". This was created in 2008. © ALETA FORD BAKER. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Many hours of meditation have entered into this work, & I listened to Annie Lenox sing "Into the West" from the LOTR set written by Howard Shore. Love that music! So uplifting! The bead Indespiral is one of my signature peyote sculptural, shaping stitches.

This piece measures 12 inches by 12 inches by 10 inches tall at the hat's tip. All of the pieces can be removed from the board & Bilbo is held in place with magnets.

Bilbo's face is sculpted by me from red clay, bisque-fired, then glazed & fired again, as is the hand of Golum.

Gandalf's locks are wool & hand-stitched to vintage black velvet ribbon into the brim of his hat.

The map used for the base / background was purchased, & drawn by John Howe, the official artist for the LOTR movies; glued to a birch board, then trimmed in deerskin strips.

Every bead used in this piece has been stitched by me. Bilbo has an armature, but the other shapes do not - the hat is of hollow construction.

Take care to treat your beaded art in a gentle way; no pulling or twisting, and do not get wet. It will last for many years to come. If displayed uncovered, use canned air to blow dust from the surface - but not too close!
