This Orchid & Wine Cabinet, has been designed with a copper top tray that holds rock pebbles. By pouring water in the top tray and setting your Orchids on top, the humidity is perfect when sitting in an East Window. This cabinet was also designed to hold 49 bottles of wine, in three bottle sizes. The side doors provide covered storage area for other bottles, or storing Orchid growing supplies.

Although this very involved Orchid Stand in the photos was part of a commission, I badly want to find more people that would like this type of work from me. If you'd like to modify the design, the panel carvings, the text carvings, or anything else, just let me know. Since I design and build it all myself, "we" can do anything you want, this cabinet is just an example of my abilities.

Here are some more photos to look at:

Copper Hardware:
I made the handles from copper, myself!
This copper work is an original design I fashioned out of copper plate and hammered and soldered it together. When I get spare time, I enjoy making silver jewelry, and hammered copper pieces. If you want to reduce the price of this cabinet, I can use Chinese factory made handles out of a catalog if you prefer.

*Project Story:*
Let's be honest with each other. This is a major investment for both of us, a lot of money to cover a lot of expensive material and hard work. If you are interested, send me a note, and we'll start a dialog and figure out what I can do for you.

The piece is built in Quartersawn White Oak with Walnut as the secondary wood. That's it, no saw-dust pressed plywood and pocket screws. This piece is made from solid wood, held together by mortise and tenon post-frame style construction. The top of the cabinet has a 2" deep copper tray that is filled with water and small rocks for setting Orchid plants on top of, to provide them the best in humidity, and drainage for watering.

The raised relief style carved Test statement on the lower section of the cabinet is a phrase from Ghandi that the customer found. Growing Orchids is a difficult, but rewarding experience for the customer, and this phrase says it all for them. If we build a similar Cabinet for you, you can have me carve whatever phrase you would like, as long as it fits on the board.

Let's face it, we live in the computer age. Although I will communicate with you by computer, I will make this cabinet with old-fashioned power and hand tools, and do the work with my own hands, not a computer controlled router carving machine. I drew out the carvings with a pencil onto tracing paper, transferred the images to the wood with Carbon Paper, and carved the panels and lettering with hand operated power and hand carving tools.

I formed the copper leaf handles on the two center doors, so that they formed the shape of a "heart" which I felt would fit the customer, the Ghandi phrase, their married love for each other, and their Orchid growing passion.

The two carved doors are "botanical plant" style carvings of two of the customer's favorite orchid types, and they were carved in 3/4" white oak.

Honestly, not much joy is found whittling flowers in a hard wood like White Oak, but changing the color of the wood by using basswood, just would have changed the whole feeling of the cabinet, so I decided to leave the carved door panels in the same Quartersawn White Oak wood also. Where else are you going to get that?

The wine bottle storage racking is in walnut, holds 49 bottles, and sits behind glass doors with metal screen that are brass that I had plated in Copper for the project.

So, are you "in?"

If you would like your own functional-art piece like, or similar, to this Orchid Cabinet, pretty please, send me a note and we'll discuss what you would like.

I've made a large variety of things over the years, the latest projects are posted at this website:

thanks so much,
