Description

Handmade mala with beads of Czech glass pearl and semi-precious amethyst, and a cotton tassel. These elegant prayer beads are perfect for various purification practices or samatha (single pointed focus on the breath) meditation. Includes gift box and introductory guide on use.

• Bead count: 108 prayer beads, 3 counter beads, 2 tassel beads, and 1 guru bead (114 total).

• Bead materials: The main prayer beads are 8mm white cream glass pearl. Each section of 27 prayer beads is separated by a 10mm amethyst counter bead. Each counter bead is preceded and followed by a pair of lavender and dark purple glass pearl beads, creating a soft, beautiful pattern to complement the amethyst. The guru bead is housed by sterling silver bead caps.

• Bead symbolism: The symbolism of the pearl is complex. It is the image of concealed wisdom, an avatar of the Moon, and the very material of the Gates of Heaven. A pearl is born as the result of irritation to the tender body of a mollusk. Trying to soothe the distress from a stuck grain of sand, this sea animal nourishes the irritation with a layer of nacre (mother of pearl), followed by another and another until the iridescent gem is formed. This provides insight into why pearls are considered gems of nurturing and healing, especially within eastern traditions. This is a profound symbol of transformative meditation practices: We seek to master our delusions (traditionally 108 in number) and transform them into a source of healing and grace for others.

As far as more speculative metaphysical properties go, Amethyst is often thought to invoke emotional and mental balance. The influence of its rich, cloudy quartz and plum entanglements are thought to keep one grounded and prevent mental disregulation.

• Cord: The cord is made of two strands of white cotton thread. The white color symbolizes purity of mind and heart.

• Knots: The cord is knotted every 27 beads, dividing the mala into 4 equal sections. It is also knotted along the guru and tassel beads. The image of untying our inner knots is a rich salvific metaphor found in many spiritual traditions.

• Accents: The accents are 5mm silver-plated daisy spacers that ornament each bead. The accents represent our intentions -- that which gives ultimate context to our practice. They remind us to deliberately establish our motivations for our meditation (and eventually, for all that we do).

• Tassel: The 4-inch tassel is handmade of soft, white cotton. It is seamlessly bound by a hair-thin metallic silver thread that matches the color of the accents, creating a beautiful contrast.

• Tassel symbolism: The tassel traditionally represents the root of a lotus that blooms up from the mud. In the same way that an elegant white lotus emerges from the dark soot of a pond, our true heart of compassion can bloom from the obscure muck of our greed, hatred, and delusion. Alternate symbolism often draws another parallel: The many threads of the tassel emerge from one unified source, in the same way all life emerges from unity with the Divine. In some traditions, the tassels are used to dry the tears that are shed from mourning the suffering of others in prayer.

• Total length from end to end: 2 feet, 2 inches (26 in).

Included with the purchase is A Primer on Samatha Meditation, a brief yet informative overview of the context, practice, and common obstacles of samatha (single pointed focus on the breath) meditation.

***Leave me a brief description in the comments of how you want to spiritually grow, and I'll pray for you as I make the mala. A vague description is fine :)***
