Dimensions

Pendant height: 1.14 Inches; Pendant width: 0.46 Inches

This pendant features a striking cabochon of Ethiopian opal, measuring 14 x 12 mm, weighing in at 3.86 ct and set in 14k white gold. It has a translucent white base and is shot through with flakes of fire in every color of the rainbow. In lower light blue and green fire is more prominent, but with brighter light the full spectrum can be seen floating in the stone. It is a really excellent gem with beautiful and unique patterning. It looks a bit similar to some Australian opals, but with generally higher translucence and truly spectacular fire.

Ethiopian opal has really redefined the opal market. It first rose to prominence with the discovery of material in the Welo province in late 2007. Before then lower quality opal had been found in a few deposits in Ethiopia, but the Welo material was very different. This mine proved to be truly extraordinary, producing a wide variety of high-quality opals, ranging from black to white and with every possible color and pattern of fire, and most importantly with opals that were highly stable. While opals from some deposits can crack if cut or allowed to dry, Welo opal is exceptionally tough and stable.

Opal is the birth stone for October. Given the current availability and pricing of Ethiopian opal, now is the time to stock up for future birthdays and anniversaries!
