Our interpretation of a traditional Scottish Dealgan, or Fearsaid (Drop Spindle).

A dealgan (farsadh) is a drop spindle for hand spinning yarn that was traditionally used in the Western Isles of Scotland (and some parts of Canada). Dealgan and farsadh loosely mean "spindle" in Gaelic.

The yarn is wound around the shaft to form the cop like on a nostepinne, giving the added benefit of ending up with a centre pull ball.

Length: 23cm (9")
Diameter at Base: 3.1cm (1 1/4")
Weight: 40g (1.2oz) Approx - will vary

Hand turned in Ash as standard and finished in beeswax. If you'd prefer it in a different wood just convo us and we'll see what we can do.

The weight will vary slightly from piece to piece and will also depend on the type of wood used, such is the nature of wood.

This Dealgan form is based on the findings of Lois Swales (of Missingspindle). Lois has conducted a huge amount of research in to these fascinating whorl-less spindles, and continues to do so.

Detailed Discussions and directions on using "ancient style" spindles are found on her blog:
