Description

Here is a rare item: I have worked as a pharmacist for 35 years and never seen this name on the label before - not in pharmacies that I have worked or at websites neither.
The name on the label - even the stuff in the bottle has been only 42 % strong - means something special for the Finns (maybe for the Yankees too). That is because of the Prohibition in 1920s- 1930s in Finland.
The Latin name Spiritus got a nickname "Pirtu" among the citizens. It was the only legal alcohol that was available: if you sudden to be a friend of the local doctor or apothecary, you could get boots with a prescription. The other way to get drunk was to buy Pirtu from the black market. The smugglers made good money by transporting illegal stuff over the Finnish Gulf from Estonia. Of course the men of the forests made homebrew too, but that was strictly punishment. There are a lot of jokes and stories of Pirtu even nowadays in Finland.

In Finnish pharmacies was used four different strengths of alcohol in the 1930s:
Spiritus (Spir Ph.F.) 85,7-87,0 weight-%
Spiritus dilutus 62,2-63,1 w-%
Spiritus fortis (Strong) 91,0-94,0 w-%
Spiritus tenuis (Week) 40,9-42,9 w-%
Quite soon there were left only Spir.fort. (even nowadays) and Spir.dil. So those other two labels are very rare, and I was lucky to find them. Even more common Spir.fort. bottles are wanted items in Finland, because of our alcohol politics history.
Pirtu is as Finnish as are Sauna and Joulupukki (=Santa Clause).

Measurements:
Weight 1467 g + 130 g, together 1.6 kg
Height without a cork 27.5 cm
Diameter 14.4 cm
Volume 2.9 liters
This bottle is in very good condition except the label, that is scratched and is not shiny anymore.

Shipping according 1.0-2.0kg cost.

I combine shippings – also with my wife`s MrsBottlenist shop items.
For multiple items the shipping costs are calculated automatically. Sometimes this automatic system takes too much payments, but no worry: if your overpayment is more than three euros, I will refund your overpayment via Etsy in few days.
