Description

A wonderful bead in the historic Japanese art form known as Shakudo. Shakudo originated in the Samurai period in Japan by esteemed artists who made ornaments to adorn swords and armor. When the Samurai period ended, these artists moved to making wearable art. This is in the form of a bead and can have a shank added to wear as a ring or it can be used as a pendant. The gold tested at 10K and it has black enamel on the top of the metal. Depicts a Samurai warrior on a horse with branches from a tree
above.

The oval of mixed metal art (shakudo) in this ring was called a kashira, a decorative element which was at one time set into the very top of a sword handle. The gold was applied to a copper background, patinated and textured in the typical purple black background. Due to the expense of gold, precious metal was used as a contrasting element.

It is in excellent condition.
