This amazing antique Victorian gutta percha brooch is one of my favorites! It dates to around 1870. The top of the piece, the angel on the sea serpent gondola, is what I believe to be gutta percha or possibly vulcanite. It sits atop a pressed horn base. Most likely worn as a mourning or remembrance piece. The design is very intricate! Such a beautiful antique Victorian brooch!

I will not test this piece because I do not want to do anything destructive to it. I feel that the piece stands on it's on merits...just from the beauty alone.

My photos make it look black, but it is more of a dark brown.

1 3/4" by 1 3/4"

There are a couple of "dots" on the back. Looks like someone tested it. On the front there is a scuff toward the top of the base...and just under the gondola is a rough patch. It has a simple C clasp, that is in working order.

Please keep in mind that colors will vary slightly on different computer monitors.

Please contact me with any questions. :)
