Raku is an ancient Japanese technique. One translation is "serendipity by fire."

New glaze I ordered from a catalog. Turned this cool earthy reddish brown with silver on outside of the rim and copper toward the bottom. That's raku: one of a kind and surprising! Smooth on part, rough on another -- that glaze is something else...all over the bowl.

There is some shiny and matte over some texture. I didn't put the texture there: the fire and glaze did all by themselves.

You can use the vase as an ornamental piece, a trinket or jewelry holder, gift for your favorite friend, or an unusual addition to your pottery collection. Lined with a glass vessel, it would make a pretty "floater" for a flower or candle.

Because of the nature of the claybody and organic firing process, this piece will not hold water. However, you can put a glass jar inside and then it could hold water/flowers, etc. It is not food safe: it's for decoration-only.

Measures approximately 5 inches by 3 by 2 1/2.
