This is one of my most popular items at my local shops and galleries up here in Lake Superior country. They are what I call "pillow pots" because of their resemblance in shape to the kind you lay your head on at night.... The unique shape gives a different slant to arranging flowers, it's more horizontal than the usual vertical orientation of vases. They look rather odd when empty but spring to life when you fill them with your favorite flowers, they do an excellent job of rooting plant clippings, some folks use them for pencil holders. More than once I've had customers report that they make the perfect "hostess" gift.

I got the image fired into the pot permanently using my photosilkscreen technique. It's rather involved but i'll give it to you in a nutshell should you be interested.

Using my Olympus camera, MacBook Pro, Adobe Elements 6 (photoshop) , Epson scanner, Canon printer I first make a transparency. Then I expose a piece of photo sensitive film, develop and adhere it to a silkscreen frame (made by my brother), print "decals" onto end rolls of our daily newspaper, soak the image in water, adhere to pot at the "leatherhard" stage of drying. Fire it once, wax or glaze over the image, glaze, fire again in "fred" (my REAL kiln) for 10 or so hours, cool for 24, open the door, voila!

Every one of these is different in size but I start out with the same amount of clay. Some are longer, like a king size pillow, but most of them are about 5"x4". The inside is glazed so it holds water. I made 2 sizes of holes for different kinds of stems. Let your imagination take over and you'll see how such a simple looking pot can add just the right amount of color splash to your table, desk, whatever!

My pottery is made from stoneware, one of the most durable of clay bodies. IT IS MADE TO BE USED! It is reduction fired to 2300 degrees, making it oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. The glazes I mix myself contain no lead or other materials hazardous to your health, so it's perfectly safe to eat and drink from.
