Get your 18 inch dolls music festival-ready with gauzy MAXI DRESSES and loose floaty TOPS, draped in beautiful folds from a flattering — and easy-to-sew — bias tape-bound halter neckline. Then complete your doll's boho look with the perfect handmade BEADED CHOKER, this season's most popular fashion accessory.
The Desert Sunrise pattern provides a ton of style for a very small outlay of time and effort. You won't believe how quick and easy the halter top and dress are to put together. There are only two pattern pieces — the dress or top and an internal yoke lining. That's it. Just those two pattern pieces and a few easy seams between them!
Best of all, because of that stabilizing internal yoke of ordinary cotton fabric, you can try out those fabrics you never get to use for the dress or top — all the fluttery silkies and liquid-smooth jerseys you've admired in the fabric store, but put back on the shelf as too hard to sew. Avoid those beauties no longer! This pattern is your chance to sew out of your comfort zone while still enjoying the ease of pinning and stitching to the quilting cotton or muslin internal yoke that holds everything together.
Wondering what to do with all the time you'll have left over? Make beaded chokers, of course. We've included detailed, photo-illustrated directions in this pattern for a simple daisy chain choker — and pattern directions for a few more advanced chokers as well. Make your 18 inch doll a trendy boho dress — and the perfect beaded jewelry to go with it. And then make a few chokers for yourself, as well!
With a loose, floaty fit, fully adjustable neck ties and a generously sized internal yoke, this dress and top are wonderfully flexible — perfect for those who sew for a variety of 18 inch dolls.
We love this pattern so much, that we've created several FREE tweak alterations — for handkerchief hems, empire waist criss-cross ties and a charming new beading pattern to make heart shaped daisy chain chokers. You can find these FREE tweak documents on the FREE STUFF page of the Lee & Pearl website at http://www.leeandpearl.com/free.html
The HALTER TOP and MAXI DRESS are rated EASY/INTERMEDIATE.
The construction steps involved in this pattern are genuinely easy. We've even broken down couture-level techniques like bias-to-bias seams and understitching into simple steps that anyone can follow.
But depending on your fabric choice, this pattern might be considered intermediate. We have made the seams as easy as possible regardless of the material you use, but hemming certain materials can be difficult — as can laying out and cutting.
The BEADED CHOKER is rated Easy. We've laid out exactly the supplies you'll need and included step-by-step, photo-illustrated directions to get you started making boho-fabulous necklaces for your doll — and for yourself as well.
MATERIALS — MAXI DRESS or HALTER TOP
2/3 yd softly draping fabric* for the Maxi Dress
11" high x 15" wide piece of softly draping fabric* for the Halter Top
6" high x 14" wide piece of medium weight woven fabric like muslin, broadcloth or quilting cotton for the internal yoke
1 yard of 1/2" wide single fold bias tape, or 1/4" wide double fold bias tape
Hook-and-loop fastener (such as Velcro™) at least 3/8" wide
* Look for soft, floaty woven fabrics like rayon challis, polyester or silk chiffon, georgette or charmeuse, lightweight cotton gauze or voile, and handkerchief linens or soft rayon/linen blends. These garments also looks fantastic made out of lightweight, stretch fabrics like nylon jersey or lamé.
Because of the seamless construction and very full skirt, both the top and maxi dress provide an opportunity to try large-scale florals and prints. And for a trendy look, try a double-layer dress or top with lace, sheer fabric or mesh over a contrasting second layer underneath. Or don't bother with a second layer, as the internal yoke acts as a built-in camisole!
MATERIALS — BEADED CHOKERS
We have included detailed information in the pattern on the bead weaving tools and materials you'll need to make an array of pretty chokers for your dolls — and for yourself.

This was such a fun and easy pattern to make, easily change the style by extending the ties and wrapping around the body. After making several I actually turned the dress around, put over a gathered blouse, used more like an apron/over skirt with faux leather as the bias tape for the neck/ties and did the wrap around style it had kind of a fantasy/medieval/pirate feel. worked well to slide the saber into.
Made the maxi dress and so easy! Love this pattern. Thank you.
Another nicely written pattern from Lee & Pearl. The dress came out great. I can't wait to try the necklaces!!
