This Citizens National Bank of Houghton Kiss Lock Coin Purse is a prime example of antique bank swag. As far as I can tell this bank no longer exists but it's promotion continues by way of this neat little coin purse providing this advice to those who open it:

"What this won't hold, deposit in

Houghton, Mich.

There is no better place to Bank"

For those not familiar with Michigan the City of Houghton is famous for its copper mining history starting with Native Americans and continuing until the late 1960's when the copper mines closed. Houghton is currently known for a school founded in 1885 by the Michigan State Legislature to teach metallurgy and mining engineering, the Michigan College of Mines. That college continues today under the name of Michigan Technological University and is the primary employer in the city.

'The Citizens National Bank of Houghton Michigan' is no longer in existence. However, my research discloses that the bank was originally organized and opened its doors for business in 1901 by a Charles H. Moss who was a banker living in Houghton Michigan. This bank erected its first building in 1902 as 'The Citizens National Bank Building' and is now known as the 'Hall Building' and still in use in Houghton. http://www.social.mtu.edu/CopperCountryArchitects/ch_build.htm [See my photo # 5 center photo in collage]

This coin purse is obviously an antique. I can't provide the specific date it was manufactured but based on the history of the bank and the materials used that it was sometime before the Great Depression in 1929. The purse is constructed of leather with a metal top, frame and kiss lock. The frame and kiss lock are gold toned. The metal top is silver with ornate impressions similar to the tin type ceilings you see in older buildings. The interior lining is leather as well. The only aspect of the purse that causes me to doubt my opinion of its age is the promotional message encasement which appears to be clear plastic. However, it's my understanding use of plastics other than bake lite expanded after WWI.

Length: 2 7/8 inches
Height: 2 3/8 inches ( depth of bag)
Width: 1 3/4 inches

This is in good condition for it's age. It has no rips, tears or holes. However, it does have signs of use over the potentially 70 to 100 years it's been in existence.
