Materials

paper, embroidery floss

A digital copy of my full-color 22-page half-size zine about the difficulties of using all-gender bathrooms on a campus that has far too few, in a cissexist world where people don't really see what the point is anyway. This zine uses documentary photography, prose, poetry, paper cutouts, collage, humor, and wordplay to weave together a narrative about my daily struggles.

Comes as a PDF and a Microsoft Word transcript with image descriptions for screen-reader access. I also recommend taking a look at the transcript for some bonus details!

From the artist's statement:

"I made this zine to document my experiences with the (lack of) all-gender bathrooms on campus. Bathrooms are a subject most people can take for granted. They're provided plentifully, with the usually unspoken assumption that we all need them. Most bathrooms also rely on the assumption that everyone is either a woman or a man and will be identified by others as such. For those who defy the gender binary, bathrooms are contested space that can never fade into the background...

It's a constant struggle with inconvenience, inaccessibility, invisibility, and hypervisibility...

When the emotional realities of cissexism stay behind closed doors, they are easy to ignore and dismiss, in favor of the status quo. Here I document my thought processes to bring them into the public and politicize them...I want to let my vulnerability pierce through privileged complacency...

You can erase me from public bathrooms, but you can't erase me from public space."
