Description

About

Marshmallow is a piezo disc contact microphone with a nice high-impedance preamplifier. It is used to pick up sound waves traveling through solid objects.

'Electrify' acoustic instruments: Just stick Marshmallow to a guitar, cajon, or whatever, and it will pick up only the sound of the instrument while blocking out external sound traveling through the air.

Make unusual recordings: You can stick Marshmallow to walls, tables, metal sheets, ceramic teacups, eggplants, etc..., and record scraping, scratching, tearing, plucking and other strange sounds.

Use as a sensor for scientific and research applications: You can stick Marshmallow to the ground to detect footfalls, you can use it to tell how an object was struck, or, using three, you can triangulate the position of tapping on a wall (these require custom software which is not included).

Variations (Flavours):
Original (white housing) -- Lower Gain.
Burnt (black housing) -- Higher Gain.

Marshmallow was originally made for the analysis of percussion sounds, and consequently has a relatively low gain. Now a high-er gain "burnt" variant is available, with about 3x gain. While the original version is capable of recording more subtle sounds, you will have to crank up your mixer, which will increase the noise in the signal. The "burnt" variant is better for things like un-amplified electric guitars, and rubbing a finger on a wall, but will clip if used for louder sounds like percussion.

Most contact mics are just a piezo disc soldered to a guitar cable. The result is a very 'tinny' sound, due to incorrect impedance-matching with traditional audio hardware. Marshmallow has a builtin pre-amp that fixes this and gives a nice full sound. Additionally, most contact mics will act as an antenna and will hum loudly in the presence of electricity. Marshmallow was designed to be impervious to hum when properly shielded.

KNOWN ISSUES
Several users have been reporting problems associated with the battery tray. These are:
1) It is not clear which way is 'up', and inserting the batteries upside-down can result in breaking the contacts while removing them.
2) The battery tray is rather difficult to remove, especially the first few times.
3) Over time, sometimes the contacts bend slightly so the battery only makes intermittent contact.

Not all users are having these issues. I personally have a number of Marshmallows that I have been using in personal projects for years and they are working fine. I am currently in the process of designing a new version with a rechargeable battery that will hopefully solve these issues.
