Description

Measures: 10" long X 9" wide 3/4" deep

The Image in this Borghese Plasterware is engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi (b.1727 - 1815) one of the most famous and sought after Engravers of the 18th Century and designed by Francis Wheatley - (b.1747 – 1801) - an English portrait painter.

There are no cracks or chips to this rare original 18th century colored engraving by Wheatley and Bartolozzi - titled "Hot Cockles". The etching has been is pasted to the frame and covered with a laquered varnish surrounded by a gilded hard plaster frame and body.
It is easy to tell that it is an original because there is a tiny fold in the paper that was laquered over and you can see a small area where it was cut to fit the frame. (see image 3)

The left of the image reads "F Wheatley Inv" meaning "invenit" or designed by Francis Wheatley 1747 – 1801 - an English portrait painter. (see image 4)

The right side of the image reads - "F. Bartolozzi Sculpts" - meaning the person who cut or carved it. (see image 3) These are the two individuals that are responsible for the master plate that is here.

"Hot Cockles" is an English children's game in which a blindfolded player is hit by one of the other players and then tries to guess the one did the hitting.
