This remarkable necklace has a soft blue/purple flower nestled on three softly curving leaves suspended from a beaded kumihimo cord.

This wonderfully textured piece was done in collaboration with my sister, Nancy. She created the beaded cord and I created the polymer clay focal bead. While the origins of kumihimo and polymer clay are separated by centuries they work perfectly side by side in this piece.

Kumihimo , a Japanese braid-making technique, dates to about 550 AD when people began to use decorative cords in religious ceremonies. Later, brightly colored braids were used to decorate clothing, hang banners and knives, and lace samurai armor together. Currently kumihimo braids are used as Obi, the sash for kimono dress. Traditionally the braids were made using bundles of untwisted silk thread. The kumihimo braid used in this piece is made with thread strung with beads.

The history of polymer clay as an art medium is only decades long, unlike many media that have been around for centuries. There is a great deal of innovation by polymer clay artist. Often, ideas are borrowed from the traditions of other materials, such as metalworking, ceramics, glass, and paper.
