St. George is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, half of whom have been kicked out due to the fact that they didn't exist. George is among this crowd. How do we know George isn't real? No dragons.

It IS possible that there was a holy knight named George who is a saint now residing in heaven.

After that the story is up for grabs.

Here's the deal. There was a terrible dragon who ate two sheep a day. When the poor folks in the area ran out of sheep they drew lots and picked a maiden for the dragon to eat. Why they didn't switch to cows or dogs or pigs or cats or pidgeons or old people we don't know. They skipped right to maidens.

Anyhow, St. George arrived in town on a maiden drawing day, made a sign of the cross and headed right out. He slew the dragon with a single blow of his lance.

That's pretty much the whole thing. But there are lots of books and stories about him. He was so big back in the day, his feast day was a bigger deal than Christmas.

St. George is the patron saint of dragonslayers, Boy Scouts, archers, cavalry, chivalry, equestrians, herpes, horsemen, horses, knights, sheep, soldiers and syphilis.

Necklace on brass ball chain measures 24 inches.
