It has been suggested that life originated at hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor, also called "black smokers". These occur at plate boundaries and hot spots, spewing hot water and are generally inhospitable to life. However, some extreme organisms live there today, and it is thought that life could have originated near hydrothermal vents on the surface of iron sulfide minerals.

While these environments potentially have much to tell us about life's history, they harbor many current day mysteries as well. With water reaching up to 400C at depths completely devoid of sunlight, they do not seem like very hospitable places to live. Yet with an abundance of chemosynthetic bacteria in place of photosynthetic organisms, communities are able to form.

This plush is a scale worm, a bright pink worm that thrives near hydrothermal vents. For this, they are considered extremophiles.

Phylum: Annelida
Class: Polychaeta
Order: Phyllodocida
Family: Polynoidae

This scale worm is made of fleece, felt, and is stuffed with polyfil. Created with a combination of hand and machine sewing.

This is my own original design, I have no pattern.

The worm measures 7.5" (19cm) long.

The last photo shows other hydrothermal vent creatures available.

My soft sculptures are not suitable for children 12 and under due to delicate parts. This would do best as a display piece.

Frequently asked questions about PHYLAplush

Maybe! I take custom requests on a limited basis, and will announce on my shop page when they are available. Otherwise, I keep a Google Doc Suggestion Box, where you may write your request: http://tinyurl.com/PHYLAplushsuggestions I will not guarantee to make everything on the list, but I will use the list as I create more stock for the shop. If you provide your Etsy username (not required), I will contact you when your item is created, so you can have first dibs.
If you see that I am currently accepting custom orders, please use the Etsy "Request Custom Order" button in my shop to initiate a conversation. Be prepared with the name of the organism and your preferred size, color(s), and price range. After we discuss and agree upon a quote, I will create a custom listing you can purchase. After purchase, I will create your plushie. I will send a photo of the completed plush for your approval, and then ship.
My plushies are made with a combination of hand and machine stitching. They are not recommended for rough play, or as dog chew toys. However, they should hold up to regular, gently play or as an office decoration.

I have not tested their performance in a washing machine. Currently, I recommend spot cleaning only.
All plushies are wrapped in colorful tissue paper, and sealed in a bubble-lined poly mailer.
I have a few self-designed patterns I use for my most popular plushies, but most are created entirely free-form.
Sorry, but I will not give out any of my patterns. However, I draw my inspiration directly from nature, which is something that anyone can do!
Fleece fabric, felt fabric, polyfil stuffing, plastic safety eyes, thread, and satin tracking labels.
It was time for a change; Weird Bug Lady was a nickname of mine since high school. When I decided to restart my shop, I wanted a more inclusive name that truly represents my products. "Phyla" (multiple of "phylum") are higher level groupings of organisms. I am an evolutionary biologist, and use the tree of life as inspiration every day in both my professional and artistic endeavors. I hope to convey that there is beauty and wonder in all groups of organisms, regardless of phylum!
