This pair of unique porcelain vintage candle holders, for taper candles, has plugs that fit into the candle hole when not in use. Each “plug” has a beautiful matching flower that blends perfectly with the other flowers in the basket.

The baskets are of antique white porcelain and are filled with 3 types of flowers that fade from creamy yellow to antique white. Pastel mint green foliage fills in the areas around the basket where there are no flowers.

The holders stand 2" tall and 3 1/2" in diameter (5.1cm x8.9cm).

These candle holders are in very good condition. I have been able to find minimal information on these but judging by the quality of work and style I would guess that they are circa 1940’s. One stopper doesn’t nest perfectly in either holder because it was made a bit fatter than the other. One of the holders has one flower petal that has broken off. The other holder has some spots of the foliage that appear to be cracking away from surrounding pieces – however they are not loose from the piece in any way. Please see the last picture for close ups of these flaws.

It appears to me that these unique candle holders were hand assembled when made. The baskets, for instance, look to be factory made as do the flowers. However the slight but noticeable differences in size of the stoppers, as well as the visual look of the foliage make me think these parts were hand made/assembled. The foliage looks as though it was put into a pastry bag with special tips to decorate where spaces need to be filled – it does not visually appear to be identical on both pieces. (I am not saying or implying this is how it was actually done – just attempting to verbalize how it "looks" visually.) This technique makes it difficult to tell the difference as to what is “broken” vs. the look they wished to achieve.

The bottoms of these candle holders had green felt that literally crumbled when I took them off the shelf at my mother’s house. This wound up being a pleasant surprise since it became visible that the bases are hollow as there is a hole in the bottom of each holder. Also hidden beneath the felt is the ink stamped marking “J4569” on both bases, however on one it has begun to fade.

Use these candle holders to set the mood for a romantic dinner or to beautify your table at your next dinner party or holiday buffet. They would also look lovely sitting on a dressing table or mantle in the sitting room.
