Vintage 1940s sewing / embroidery booklet

Smocking by Penelope
Booklet in the 'Book of "HOWS" Series'
Published by William Briggs & Co. Ltd, Manchester, England/UK during the 1940s (precise date unknown)

A softback/paper booklet - 16 pages including cover
Dimensions approx. 7" x 10" (approx. 18cm x 24cm)

A great reference tool for anyone with an interest in smocking. Features easy-to-follow instructions (including black and white photographs and diagrams) on a wide variety of stitches for use with smocking techniques - and guidance notes on 'Preparation and Method'. Also includes scaled-down, charted patterns for a lady's smock and a baby's frock.
Please note that any transfers (i.e. paper transfers with rows of evenly spaced dots) that are referred to within the text were not included with the publication. However, even without these transfers (which could be easily replicated anyway), this booklet is packed with vintage inspiration as well as practical guidance

In good condition - a bit of rubbing to the edges and spine - a few small folds, creases and 'nicks' to the pages - in particular, a small 'nick' to the top of each page (approx 1cm only) and a small split to bottom of spine - staples have rusted a bit but are still holding the contents tightly - no annotations or stains
