I love this squat size with a wide mouth--easy to reach in and grab what you need. I like to use these as candy dishes. Made by Ball Brothers of Muncie, Indiana from 1933-1942, the shape of these jars just makes me feel like I'm living back in time.

jar height: 4.50 inches with the lid on
mouth opening: 3 inches across

This type of jar with the wire closure and glass disc lid is called a lightning jar. I've heard the name "lightning" came from the idea that you could open it "as fast as lighting." I've also heard that moonshiners sold their liquor in these jars and that's where the name "white lightning" comes from. The wide mouth is more rare than the smaller size.
