I made this Book Purse from a gorgeous, damaged antique book I found at a library sale, "Martin Rattler" by R. M. Ballantyne. This is one of my favorite types of books to use, a stunning cover on what is now a practically unknown book. It was the story of a boy's adventures in Brazil, but now this book can have an adventure of its own as your new purse!

The book cover is made of red book cloth, with an ornate Art Nouveau style floral design stretching up and into a framed box of blue ombre printing, surrounded by stars. The title is printed in a lovely mustard color. The spine is just as pretty as the cover, with another floral design framing the cover, and printed in a blue, green and yellow shading, giving a rainbow effect.

The interior is fully lined in 100% quilting cotton, with a pattern of red flowers on a black background, to match the floral pattern and red of the cover.

The handles are made with black wooden beads on a black metal frame, and the purse closes with a vintage blue bakelite button and grosgrain ribbon loop. When not in use, the handles may be folded inside the purse and you can store it on a bookcase just like a real book. The Book Purses look wonderful stashed among your favorite tomes, and as you collect them, you can have an entire shelf full of purses! You can even store valuables inside them on your shelf, to keep them hidden.

There is a narrow pocket inside perfect for a slim phone or wallet, and the spine is reinforced for durability. While the purses are not fragile, and are certainly more durable than the original books they are made from, care should be taken with them. If you treat your Book Purse like you would treat a treasured old book, you will be able to enjoy it for years and years to come.

The dimensions are approximately 7 1/2" long, 1 1/2" wide, 5" tall, and the handles are 6" wide by 4" tall. The longer the book, the wider the purse, so this one is a nice size for carrying your necessities on a special night out, despite it's otherwise compact size.

This would be a great purse for any collector of beautiful books, Art Nouveau fancier, or anyone who needs a stunning little red purse.

Bibliophiles, don't fret! All of my wallets and purses are made from damaged or discarded books, 90% were being thrown out by libraries. All care is taken to never use valuable or rare books.
