Description

This set of two gently squared plates is perfect for side salads or a light lunch. The vivid patterning was created by the ebb and flow of flame over many days of firing. Five diamond shaped spots in the center of each were masked by the feet of another pot during the firing. Note the unusual "waterspotting" pattern on both is found only on select pieces.

I threw these with clay dug from the St. Cloud area of Minnesota. The rich, organic colors and patterns you see are created by the unique clay mineralogy interacting with flame, wood ash, and water vapor over the course of a 10 day firing. Dimensions: about 6"W X 1.5"H

If you like this style but only want one plate check out these similar pieces at www.etsy.com/listing/43264354/wood-fired-plate and www.etsy.com/listing/43320201/wood-fired-plate

I created these pieces during my year long apprenticeship at the St. John's Pottery. The stamps near the foot, visible in some photos, are my signature chop and the St. John's Pottery studio seal, indicating the piece was fired in the Johanna Kiln in Collegeville, Minnesota.

This piece is indigenous stoneware fired to ~2300°F. Fully functional and safe for food and beverages, it can even be used in ovens, dishwashers, and microwaves if you choose (avoid stovetops and direct flame).
