This porcelain plate was thrown on the potter's wheel and hand carved. The knotwork was designed directly on the rim and the outline was carved into the porcelain when it was leather-hard (dry enough to hold its shape but not completely dry). The outline was then filled with a black slip. No templates or molds were used, and each knot is unique. A Roman numeral I is inscribed on the bottom indicating the number of "strands" in the knot.

After the bisque firing, underglazes were painted on the knotwork to highlight the the knot. The plate was then finished with a clear glaze and fired to approximately 2300°F (1,260°C). This creates a delicate yet durable finished piece of pottery. The plate is microwave and dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended.

The plate is approximately 10.25" (26 cm) in diameter and 1.5" (3.5 cm) tall.
