King of the Road is my tribute to the romanticized traveling life emblemized by the Gypsy. I say romanticized as opposed to romantic. I’m sure that, unless born to it, it would be a very difficult way to live. Always moving on, and how so? Why in that culturally unique home on wheels, the Gypsy caravan or “Vardo”.

Horses have always been a part of Gypsy life. In Britain, after the Second World War, Gypsy horse breeders began an attempt to create a new breed. One that would be as colorful and special as the caravans they would pull. The new horse would have to be strong, intelligent, athletic, docile and possess excellent endurance. In addition to all these qualities it must be showy!

They were after a smaller version of the Shire (the largest horse in the world, well known to British farmers and their plows for hundreds of years) with greater feathering (the long flowing hair covering the lower legs and hooves) flashy coloring and long mane and tail. The result was the Gypsy Vanner. They come in various colors, but the black and white (piebald), brown and white (skewbald) and tri-colored (black, white and brown) are most desirable. Mine is a tri-colored.

Freed from his Vardo, our Vanner frolics (rocks) exuberantly over head (obviously exhibiting his athleticism). He is approximately 35” from base to ears and the same from knees to flowing tail tip. My “Rocking R” brand is burned into the underside of the base.
