The peacock is an awe inspiring animal. For centuries it's plumage has been coveted, collected and displayed. Several species of peafowl are endangered because of intense hunting. Peacocks are thought to bring good luck by some cultures, they are frequently depicted in ancient art, and they are arguably the most regal of all our planet's inhabitants. The peacock is the national bird of India, and the regional bird of Pakistan. They are proof of the pure beauty that only exists in nature.

The mosaic is 36"W x 34 1/2"H. Hand cut and broken glazed ceramic tile and glass tile, set on cement board. It is >40 pounds in weight, with a specialized French Cleat hanging system that securely supports the piece and allows it to hang flush with the wall. Zoom the outdoor photo to get the most accurate representation on the coloring. His plumage is iridescent- Cobalt Blue, Blueberry, Cornflower Blue, Emerald Green, Moss Green, and Persimmon tiles and glass compose the eyes in his train. Shards from an antique plate with touches of blue, pink and gold, highlight the eyes. The frame is handmade as well, and is painted in glossy black enamel. The background is a gray/white marbleized ceramic tile that compliments his vitality. Contrasting grouting, Charcoal for the bird, and Delorean Gray for the background, gives depth and dimension to the work.

The mosaic was inspired by a trip to a small local zoo, that is well known for their wild peacocks that roam the zoo grounds and surrounding neighborhood. This fellow was perched on a branch, in a tree, screaming and displaying his feathery splendor. My husband almost became a peacock "direct hit" when he got too close under the tree, and our friend unexpectedly relieved himself. The near miss was worth the great pictures that in turn led to the mosaic.
