This pretty Anglo Indian style silver tone hair comb measures 6 x 6 ins (approx 15 x 15 cms).

It is made in the form of a coronet of silver tone leaves further embellished with clear rhinestones. Such ornaments were often inserted into the high chignon combined with an ostrich feather plume, as seen on the mannequin.

The style is what we now call Anglo Indian because it was probably made in the Indian sub continent in the late 19th or early 20th century for the European market.

With India as part of the British Empire, the interaction of the Indian population with their British rulers led to an art form, which was a mixture of styles. In the 1870s Queen Victoria became Empress of India and this led to an influx into Europe of ornaments made in India for the Western market. Objects produced under the Anglo Indian influence were not the kind which the indigenous population themselves would have used. Nevertheless they showed elements of what was considered an Indian style, carefully adapted to suit European tastes.
