A flashy green blue faceted labradorite gemstone measuring 1.38" x 0.95" is hand soldered and set within an intricate bezel setting in sterling silver. This pendant hangs from an 18" sterling silver chain, with all silver oxidized and polished for a chic, antique-like finish. Hammered sterling silver hangs out from under the stone, accentuating it's shape and adding a little sparkle as the light hits these facets. This necklace closes with a small trigger clasp surrounded by tiny faceted icy blue czech glass beads.

This necklace has been hand formed, soldered, sawed, polished, and oxidized by me, and is absolutely one of a kind!

Labradorite is truly a beautiful gem. It is a mineral whose charm is not fully noticed and may be overlooked if not viewed from the proper position. It might be seen generally as a dull, dark looking mineral, until the colorful shiller is observed glowing on the surface. The usually intense colors range from the typical blues and violets through greens, yellows and oranges. Some rare specimens display all these colors simultaneously.

The color display is from lamellar intergrowths inside the crystal. These intergrowths result from compatible chemistries at high temperatures becoming incompatible at lower temperatures and thus a separating and layering of these two phases. The resulting color effect is caused by a ray of light entering a layer and being refracted back and forth by deeper layers. This refracted ray is slowed by the extra travel through the layers and mixes with other rays to produce a light ray coming out that has a different wavelength than when it went in.
