Original New Mexico landscape oil painting 'Abiquiu Field of Summer Gold' by Santa Fe artist Dawn Chandler.

Abiquiu Field of Summer Gold is inspired by late-summer drives along the Rio Chama near Abiquiu, New Mexico. Much like my painting Ghost Ranch After the Rain, this scene comes from an annual summertime drive I make each August. It is a road trip date with myself and my camera.

Some years I follow the Enchanted Circle; this year I drove a loop from Santa Fe up to Tres Piedras, over to the Chama Valley, then down through Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu. If you’ve ever driven from Ghost Ranch into Abiquiu and Bode’s, you’ve seen the fields to the south of the highway, between the road and the Rio Chama. On this August afternoon, one of those fields was ablaze with yellow flowers.

I don’t know what they were—a crop or wildflowers—but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that the scene was so stunning I pulled over to photograph it—and later, to paint it. When I drove that loop again a week later, the flowers were gone—thank goodness they live on in this painting!
