The story of “The Little Lame Prince” written by Miss Mulock has been a children’s classic since it was first published in the early 1870’s. This print called “He sat Gazing out of the Window” is by Violet Moore Higgins (1886 - 1967) from a 1927 edition published by Albert Whitman and Co. of Chicago. Ms. Higgins wrote in the foreword to the 1927 edition about the author Miss Mulock, “It is strange that so little biographical record exists of one whose work exerted such an influence in her time, and still is known and loved, but the annals of the good, like those of the poor, are usually short and simple”. That same might also be said about Violet Higgins as there is little information available about this wonderful illustrator who attended the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1900’s. She has a long list of book credits to her name as well as illustrations for the Treasure Chest comic book (1946-47) and the children’s feature that she drew for the Associated Press called “Junior Editors from the 1950’s until her death in 1967.

The print definition and quality of this print are typical of the 1920 time period. Although it is on a very high grade paper it is still lacking much of the sharp clarity that is available today with offset printing but adds timeless charm to this beautiful print. The colors are as vibrant today as when published over 80 years ago, and offer a glimpse into art created during the early 20th century by one of the premier women artists of the time.

There is only slight yellowing of the paper around the actual image but otherwise this print is in excellent condition coming from a book that was well cared for. The rough edge from the binding has been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge has been trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during display/shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book measured approximately 6-1/2 x 4-1/2” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in an 8x10 standard frame.
