The cliffside village I photographed is part of Cinque Terre. The buildings appear to hang directly from the cliffs above the sea. From my viewpoint, the village stacked naturally along the rock face, with each structure resting tightly against the one below it. The relationship between the architecture and the cliff immediately stood out.
As I studied the scene, what held my attention was the symmetry created by the layout of the buildings. The lines of the structures followed the contours of the cliff, creating a visual rhythm that carried across the frame. I took time to refine the composition, carefully balancing the placement of the village against the water and coastline below.
I captured the image once the scene felt complete, focusing on the harmony between the geometry of the buildings and the rugged landscape supporting them. The final photograph reflects the balance between human construction and the natural cliff that holds it in place.

Always pleased when I receive a picture from John Scala. John is an amazing photographer and always tries to meet your needs. What's also amazing is that John donates all the profits from his pictures to Oceana, a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect the world's oceans.
