Highlights
This is "The Book of the Rifle" by T. F. Fremantle and published by Longman's, Green, and Co. of New York and London in 1901. This is an authentic antiquarian book of the era - it is not a reproduction, not a re-print, not a digital print. The hard cover book has 558 pages plus 32 pages of advertising of other Longman's publications. The work is presented over 20 chapters covering: Development of Missile Weapons; Early Military Rifles; National Rifle Association; Devices for Rapid Fire; Early Sporting Rifles; The Standing Position; Sighting; The Lyman Sight; Aiming; Accuracy of Rifles; Angles of Elevation; Movement of the Rifle in Firing; Accessories; Importance of Target Shooting; Penetrable Targets Now Used; Methods of Comparing Merit of Groups of Shots; The Hythe Ranges; The Bisley Meeting; Dr. Carver's Feats; Ancient Rifle Clubs; plus an index. The more detailed Table of Contents is shown in photos 3, 4, and 5. There are 54 plates all in black and white. The book is in fair condition, with somewhat secure binding with binding splits inside the front and back covers and covers starting to loosen from the bound pages, complete and intact pages except the blank frontpiece page has separated as shown in the last photo, and wear to the covers and spine. Inside the front cover is an indecipherable name written in cursive from Iola, New Mexico. The hard cover book measures about 8 7/8" by 5 3/4" by 1 3/8". In fair condition.
