Artist Bio
The mosaics of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna (ca. 425–450 CE) were created by anonymous late Roman/early Byzantine craftsmen during the regency of Galla Placidia, sister of Emperor Honorius. This small cross-shaped mausoleum, one of the oldest preserved Christian monuments in Ravenna, features some of the finest surviving 5th-century mosaics. Renowned for their deep blue starry fields, radiant gold tesserae, and symbolic figures, these works blend classical Roman illusionism with emerging Christian mysticism, marking a pivotal moment in the development of sacred art that influenced Byzantine and medieval traditions across Europe.
