About this item

This beautiful and imposing late Victorian mahogany piano stool is a wonderfully characterful piece of nineteenth century furniture that combines decorative elegance with practical storage. Originally designed for use at the piano, its wide seat and balanced proportions mean it works equally well today as a dressing table stool, hallway seat, or occasional piece placed anywhere around the home.

The overall silhouette is particularly striking. The stool has elegant curved legs that sweep outward and downward with a confident stance, giving the piece a sense of both stability and grace. At the top are the distinctive turned handles, beautifully shaped and symmetrical, which frame the seat and create a sculptural presence when viewed from either side. The wood itself is solid mahogany, displaying a deep warm tone with the kind of rich aged patina that only develops over many decades of careful use. The surface shows signs of a life well lived, with gentle wear that enhances rather than detracts from its character.

The seat itself is upholstered in what appears to be the original fabric, secured with traditional upholstery studs around the edge. The material has a repeating woven pattern in soft neutral tones that complements the dark mahogany frame perfectly. The upholstery remains surprisingly well preserved and still provides a comfortable yet firm seat, making it entirely practical for everyday use while retaining the authenticity of the period.
A particularly charming decorative feature can be seen across the front stretcher, where there is an original hand painted symmetrical motif. The design flows outward from a central point, with two mirrored forms that resemble stylised birds or peacocks facing one another. From their bodies extend delicate curling lines that form graceful scrolls, decorated with small suspended shapes that resemble tiny bells or pendants. Subtle touches of green and gold paint add colour and movement to the design, creating a decorative flourish that balances perfectly across the centre and enhances the Victorian sense of ornament and craftsmanship.

The seat lifts to reveal a generous storage compartment inside, which remains clean and well preserved. Originally intended for storing sheet music, the interior is extremely useful today for everyday household items. Placed in a hallway it makes an ideal place to keep keys, gloves or small accessories, while beside a dressing table it can hold brushes, scarves or other personal items. The lid is supported by a folding arm mechanism which prevents the top from falling back too far, a thoughtful piece of engineering that adds to both safety and usability.

Because of its wide seat and lack of a backrest, the stool sits very comfortably against a wall, making it particularly suitable for narrower spaces such as hallways or landings. The proportions allow it to function as a practical seat without dominating the room, while the graceful Victorian lines ensure it remains visually elegant.

Structurally the stool remains strong and sturdy, reflecting the quality of the mahogany construction and the craftsmanship of the period. It shows the gentle wear and patina you would expect from a piece of furniture that has been used and appreciated for well over a century, but it remains entirely sound and ready for continued use.

Overall this is a beautiful example of a Victorian piano stool, combining decorative hand painted detail, elegant turned handles, and practical storage with the warmth and presence of aged mahogany. It is a piece that brings both charm and usefulness to a room, and one that carries with it the unmistakable character of genuine antique furniture.
