The Oil-Slick
A Living Oxidation Finish

Named for the sudden eruption of color that forms across the brass during the patination process, The Electric Bloom captures a moment of chemistry frozen in metal. Through a carefully controlled oxidation reaction, the copper within the brass alloy transforms into a spectrum of iridescent compounds—producing a surface alive with shifting color and luminous depth.

Unlike paint, plating, or artificial dyes, this finish forms directly from the metal itself. As the brass reacts, layers of oxidation spread organically across the surface, creating a vibrant bloom of color that appears almost electrical in nature. Deep indigo and violet tones ripple through fields of emerald green, while flashes of bright turquoise and even reds as warm copper emerges where the reaction intensifies. The colors are not applied—they are grown from the metal through the chemistry of the process.

The texture carries both visual and tactile complexity. Subtle mineral layers create gentle variations across the surface, giving the brass a faint topography that catches light from different angles. In softer lighting the finish deepens into darker, atmospheric blues and purples. Under brighter light, the surface reveals vibrant greens and electric blues that seem to shift and shimmer as the lighter moves in your hand.

No two pieces will ever form the same pattern. The exact movement of the chemical reaction varies across every case, meaning each lighter becomes a completely unique composition of color and texture. Some will develop bold, high-contrast blooms while others form deeper, more subtle gradients of tone. Each piece is a one-of-one expression of the metal’s own transformation.

The Electric Bloom finish draws inspiration from the dramatic oxidation seen in naturally weathered copper and brass, where time, air, and moisture slowly sculpt the surface into something far more complex than the original metal. This finish captures that phenomenon at its most vibrant moment—preserving the explosive beauty of the reaction before time softens its intensity.

Sealed and Protected

After the patina forms, the surface is sealed using museum grade micro-crystalline wax used by conservators and collectors to preserve delicate patina’s on metal for years.
Also known as Renaissance wax, the protective coating bonds to the brass at a molecular level to resist abrasion from everyday pocket carry. It protects the finish, enhancing the color and iridescent effect without masking the temperature or tactile character of the metal. It still feels like brass — not plastic.
The finish is durable, but it does need to be reapplied from time to time. Use a small amount from the included jar and what it set for five minutes and then buff lightly with the included microfiber cloth until smooth and shiny.

The final layer is a museum-grade microcrystalline wax, which acts as the first line of defense against wear.

Each lighter ships with:

• A microfiber buffing cloth

You can maintain the finish exactly as it was the day it arrived — or allow the lighter to slowly develop its own character through use over time.

The Case

This lighter uses a precision CNC-machined brass body designed to accept a standard Zippo-style insert.

The case is machined from solid brass, giving it substantial weight, clean geometry, and tight tolerances throughout. There is no plating and no coatings beneath the finish — only raw brass prepared specifically for custom patina work.

The result is a platform designed from the start for hand-finished metalwork.
