This is an antique French letter box with carved detailing, probably made of walnut. This is where a lady would have kept her stamps, stationary, envelopes, postcards and such. The top says either "Couverte" or "Couverle". Part of the first "e" is missing". The top is carved with a country French povencal floral and criss cross design and framed in straight line carving that mimics a frame. The sides are deeply grooved and chip carved to mimic rustic log siding. Inside there are 3 compartments that were used to hold letters, stationary and envelopes.

The entire piece measures approx. 7 3/8" across, 5 3/4" tall and 4 1/2" deep or 5" deep if you include the base.

Condition: Appropriate wear at corners, etc. The lid hinges have been replaced at some point, but the replacement hinges even have age to them. The small nails that were used to affix the hinges in place were too long and have come through the top of the lid and should definitely be replaced with shorter nails or brads. The lock hardware appears to be original, the key is present, but the lock no longer works, or at least I couldn't get it to lock. The corners have a single dovetail that looks like the side silhouette of a straightback chair.

All in all, this is a very impressive, beautiful piece.
