About this item
The first combat submarine in history. David Bushnell's American Turtle attempted to sink HMS Eagle in New York Harbor, 1776. This technical engraving shows every detail of the hand-cranked submersible that changed naval warfare.
WHAT YOU GET:
- 8 print-ready files at 300 DPI
- Cutaway cross-section in 8x10 and 4x6 postcard
- Three-view technical plate in 11x14 and 10x8
- Each diagram in two aesthetics: restored white and Prussian blue blueprint
- 10-page illustrated guide with the full mission account, complete 22-part diagram key, and printing instructions
TWO STYLES INCLUDED:
The white versions are carefully restored from the original 1881 engraving. Clean, sharp, faithful to the source. The blueprint versions are a modern reimagining of the same diagrams, rendered in Prussian blue in the style of a 19th-century cyanotype technical drawing. Same detail, completely different feel. One belongs in a bright study. The other belongs on a dark wood shelf or in a black frame.
Source: 1881 engraving by Lt. F.M. Barber, USN, held by the Library of Congress. Professionally restored by Heritage Lab.
HOW TO USE:
- Print the cutaway for your study wall or office
- Frame the three-view plate above your desk
- Choose white for bright rooms, blue for darker shelving or wood paneling
- The 4x6 versions make striking postcards
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
All files 300 DPI, print-ready at stated sizes. Restored from the original Library of Congress scan. The Turtle was a one-man oak submarine, hand-cranked, designed by Yale graduate David Bushnell. Sergeant Ezra Lee piloted the September 1776 mission against HMS Eagle in New York Harbor. The auger could not penetrate the iron fittings on the ship's hull. The guide tells the complete story.
Heritage Lab restores historical documents to museum-grade quality. Every file is print-ready the day you download it. No physical product will be sent.
