This is a necklace from before the turn of the last century, made of either gutta percha or vulcanite. Both materials were used in Victorian jewelry, and as they are so similar they are difficult to tell apart. The simple beauty of this necklace is rare for a period of high ornamentation. The beads are very light weight, definitely not glass or Whitby jet.

The color goes from black to very deep brown, with the blackest beads being the largest ones at the middle, and the smaller ones toward the ends being a little lighter, more brown. The simple ring clasp looks old and is gold in color, and may be gold or gold filled. Length is 16 1/2".

Condition: The necklace will need to be re-strung before wearing, there is wear to the string. Under magnification, the beads show surface crazing, which is not surprising considering their age and that they are made from a natural material. This does not detract from their beauty, and is surface only.
