West African Barber Shop Sign.
Painted in acrylics or oils, signs like these are found in many neighborhoods and towns in different African countries and also parts of the Carribbean. Depicting styles of interest and trend, items that the shop may sell or services they offer.
This sign is of a hair style with equipment and products that may have been available, the cut, maybe a shave and some tools to help you maintain the style at home, a 'fro comb', comb, scissors, etc. Painted on plywood with recycled wood bracing strips on the back. It is signed by the artist 'Paps' and in colors of red, blue, green, black and white, with the words 'Je Coiffe Chez Abou'.
The size is approx. 40" x 24" x 1". The painting does have signs of age and a feel of naiveness, but a beautiful example of an African Folkart painting.
