THE STORY BEHIND THIS ICON:
This particular icon is known as The Virgin of Vladimir. It was originally a gift from the Byzantine empire and was rumored to have been painted by Saint Luke. Also known as "the Mother of Tenderness".

Mary holds the Christ-Child close accentuating the maternal relationship with her son. She is dressed in a cloak of the deepest red showing her humanity. The maphorion encircles her head. It has a precious golden border and is ornamented with three stars, one over the forehead and the shoulders-signs of her virginity.

Christ is a baby in size only for he is “the Word”. His face reflects the concern and the wisdom of God. His garments are gold depicting everlasting life, orange depicting revolution and over his shoulder is the clavium (scarf). Christ presses His face affectionately against his mother’s cheek and his arms encircle her neck in tenderness and consolation. It is as if they share together all that is to come.

THE TECHNIQUE:
This is my interpretation of this traditional for the byzantine canons icon. The icon is painted on a handmade wood panel with tempera on stucco canvas. I took the wood of a vintage chest to turn it into base for this icon. The figures are surrounded by 2 tones of gold- gold leaf and gold paint, creating antique or "aged" look of the image. The icon is varnished with couple of layers to assure a long lasting image and to make it easy and safe to clean it from dust. The back is varnished with darker tone semi transparent varnish for a nice finish.

The icon measures 15.4" long , 13" wide and 0.4" deep
