I have to admit - I have been holding onto this piece for years. I had good intentions to do something with it when I bought it, but I realise I can't keep everything I buy and I want to to go to someone who will use it and wear it.

This is an early 19th century French bracelet cuff piece. I bought it from a dealer who regularly supplies early 19th century treasures, and this is no exception.

The piece is in brass with ormolu or gold plating. There is very fine detail across the entire piece with beautifully faded green paste stones. It is possible these stones were originally clear, but have attracted verdigris from the silver leaf applied to the back of the stone. However it seems more likely that they are mean to be pale green.

Each element in this piece is hand made and hand set - it is a real work of art. Stone sizes are a bit irregular, which implies hand cutting, and each of the ornate brass embellishments was once flat pressed brass, which has been turned and shaped then applied to the sturdy brass base.

What tells me the age of this piece is that the elements are riveted onto the base. Such riveting was less common later in the 19th century and is a feature of early 19th century pieces.

There are two holes at one end of the piece, and a slot for a press clip at the other end. There are lots of possibilities to transform this into a stunning piece of statement jewelry - bracelet, pendant, belt buckle.

Measures 2.75 inches across and 2.25 inches high at the highest point. Please take care with old pieces of jewelry that have stones - I don ot know how secure they are though I have tested this piece gently and the stones seem secure, with one possibly glued in and the rest held in place in their settings.
